Medicines Management

Access to end of life medicines in each borough

Access to End of Life Medicines over the Christmas Period

You can find details of how to access end of life medications in each of the local boroughs. The database gives details for how to access end of life care medications across north east London and includes arrangements for the period from 21st December 2020 to 4th January 2021. Several community pharmacies in each borough will stock end of life medicines. It is important that where possible arrangements are made for patients to have medicines dispensed during core opening hours.

Please note the address region are currently recommending to check if a pharmacy is open.

There are separate arrangements for healthcare professionals to access these medicines out of hours (via the central OOH contact number).

Please refer to the NHS find a pharmacy website for a full list of all open or closure status of London community pharmacies.

Re-use of Medicines

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England and NHS Improvement have published guidance on running a medicines re-use scheme in a care home or hospice setting during the Covid-19 pandemic

  • That no other stocks of the medicine are available in an appropriate timeframe and there is an immediate patient need;
  •  No suitable alternatives for an individual patients are available;
  • The benefits of using a medicine that is no longer needed by the person for whom it was originally prescribed or bought outweigh any risks for an individual patient receiving that unused medicine.

There is an expectation any re-use of medicines to be in line with the recommendations set out in SOP and that it is implemented in a safe and effective manner.

This change will allow us to make better use of medicines especially end of life care medicines which are routinely wasted in care homes.
